According to the U.N. Study, "The World Health Organization estimates
85
to 115 million women are genitally mutilated in Africa and Asia, and
estimates 2 million more girls in 26 African countries, in Asia, in
immigrant communities in Europe and America, and among Ethiopian and
Bedouin Jews in Israel." The Study goes on to say, "It is wrong to
associate female genital mutilation with any one religion or,
particularly with Islam. It is practiced by people of various faiths."
The Study further says, "The Special Rapporteur on traditional practices
points to a complex of beliefs, values and socio-cultural behavior which
explain the need for prudence in approaching a highly emotional subject.
Mutilation can lead to death or grave medical and psychological
conditions."
