According to the U.N. Study, "Crimes of honor are committed with varying
degrees of intensity in the Middle East, South America and Southern
Asia, as in the past in the Mediterranean basin; a man has impunity to
kill any woman suspected of dishonoring his family; she is seen as a
symbol or piece of property rather than as a human being. The Special
Rapporteur on extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions addresses
this issue and mentions women driven to suicide or disfigured by acid.
Religious extremism in Bangladesh has made women particularly vulnerable
to discriminatory fatwas."
