*KYRGYZSTAN - "Staying Home"

"Where do you work?
 I am a farmer.
 Do you have kids?
 Thanks God.
 Does your wife work?
 No, she stays home.
So, how does she spend her day?
Well, she gets up at four in the morning, brings water and wood, makes the fire,
prepares breakfast, and cleans the yard. Then, she goes to the river to do laundry.
Then, she takes the two younger kids to trade at the roadside. Then she buys
 groceries and makes the dinner.
She helps weed and water the vegetable garden.
What do you do while she is working?
I go to the village to talk about business and have a drink with my friends.
Then, I go home to have supper that my wife made.
Does she go to bed after supper?
No, I go to bed, but she continues working, until 9-10 p.m.
But, I think you said your wife didn't work?
Of course, she doesn't. I told you, she stays home."

ARMENIA

Women Spend 5 X More Time On Housekeeping Than Men

In Armenia, until recently, women's housekeeping labor was not evaluated in a quantitative sense and was not reflected in the national statistics. Under the support of the Swedish Development Agency, the Armenian National Statistics Service researched the structure of time distribution. However, the approximate estimations of women's labor are far from real, but the problem seems to be better understood. The research demonstrated detailed time schedules used by women and men for their paid and non-paid (housekeeping) duties.

It turned out that the average woman in Armenia spends about five times as much time on housekeeping than men. ........................

Paid activity does not free women from housekeeping duties as much as it frees men.....

The researchers do not only demonstrate the problem of women's labor estimation, but also highlight the necessity to undertake special measures at the state management level. In particular, the experts state, it is necessary to consider the difference when planning provision of pensions for women of Armenia."
