Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI)
Sisterhood is Global Institute (SIGI) is an international
non-governmental, non-profit organization established in
1984 to deepen the understanding of women's rights at the
local, national, regional and global levels and to strengthen
the capacity of women to exercise these rights. With members in 70 countries,
SIGI currently maintains a network of over 1,300 individuals and organizations.
SIGI's primary objectives are: to alert individuals, groups and governments
to discriminatory or oppressive practices against women; conduct and publish
research and distribute information; design educational programs to help women
empower themselves; develop partnerships project aimed at women redefining
and gaining power; and encourage women from all societies to work creatively
together to emphasize and achieve common goals including equality, peace, sustainable
development, economic justice, bodily integrity, and freedom from violence.
SIGI Officers and Advisory Board are from Canada, Lebanon, Cuba, Afghanistan,
South Africa, USA, Portugal, Brazil and the Philippines.
