World Council of Churches (WCC)
The World Council of Churches (WCC) was founded in Amsterdam
in 1948. WCC brings together more than 340 churches, denominations
and church fellowships in over 100 countries and territories
throughout the world, representing some 400 million Christians.
WCC is a global ecumenical movement rooted in the life of
Christian churches called together to promote unity, common
witness, service to human need and breaking down barriers
between people seeking justice and peace. The work for Justice,
Peace and Creation has an active Women's Programme in the
Decade to Overcome Violence 2001-2010. Activities in 2002
included a joint programme with the World YWCA and LWF Women's
Programme to visit with women and children in conflict situations
to record violence that women experience and ensure that
women are supported after conflicts. From 25 November- 10
December 2004 , WCC will hold "On Wings of a Dove," a worldwide
campaign on overcoming violence against women and children.
