Oxfam Great Britain and
Oxfam International
Oxfam was established in 1942 in Oxford,
England as a National Famine Committee to assist war refugees
and displaced people across Europe . Today, Oxfam Great Britain
is working in over 70 countries with local partners to alleviate
poverty and injustice. The mission of the organization is to
do this by working on issues such as Trade, Education, Debt
and aid, Livelihoods, Health, HIV/AIDS, Conflict and Natural
Disasters, Democracy and Human Rights, and Gender Equality.
Oxfam’s
work on Democracy and Human Rights focuses on the denial of poor women and men’s
right to influence the decisions that affect their lives. A majority of the world’s
poor are women: around 70 per cent of the 1.3 billion people who live in extreme
poverty on less than one dollar a day, are women and girls. Oxfam International
is a confederation of 12 organizations known as the Oxfams, working together
in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty, suffering and
injustice. Oxfam Great Britain publishes Links, a journal on Gender
Equity.
