World Health Organization: The Department of Gender
and Women’s Health (GWH)
The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nations
specialized agency for health established on 7 April 1948.
Health is defined in WHO’s Constitution as a state
of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not
merely the absence of disease and infirmity. WHO is governed
by 192 Member States through the World Health Assembly. The
Department of Gender and Women’s Health (GWH) is charged
with helping WHO’s various programs and departments
undertake the challenge of integrating gender considerations
into their work. It is also responsible for researching and
disseminating information on neglected topics directly pertaining
to women’s health, such as gender-based violence against
women.
