Kanun is a custom, the laws of which are meant to govern the slightest human action. The cornerstone of kanun is the Besa or word of honour. Honour has an extreme importance in Albania. Probably the most horrific aspect of Kanun is the blood revenge which obliges a family to avenge a crime by killing an adult male member of the perpetrator's family….. which must then in turn take revenge, resulting in secular struggles which can decimate entire families.
