Women’s
Link Worldwide is happy to announce that we have won the court case that will
enable our clients Veronica and Tania* to have the opportunity to create the
family they want. Last
year, Veronica and Tania received news that their public hospital in Spain would
no longer provide them with in vitro fertilization treatment. The Ministry of
Health had just issued an administrative decision that banned women from
accessing reproductive technologies unless they were infertile or had
attempted to conceive through "vaginal coitus" in the last twelve
months. Since Veronica and Tania are in a same sex-relationship, the hospital
halted Tania’s efforts to get pregnant. All
women have the right to decide when and how they want to be mothers, free of
discrimination. Veronica and Tania saw this right taken away from them due to
their sexual orientation. Women’s Link Worldwide took this case to the
courts, seeking to guarantee this fundamental right. The judge condemned the
actions of both the hospital, for denying the treatments, and the Local
Health Authority, for discrimination. This
week we are celebrating. We are going to make sure that people across Spain
and around the world know about this huge victory for all women. Then, we
will get back to work to make sure that this decision is implemented, so that
no other woman has to fight so hard for her right to define her family. *Out of
respect for our client’s privacy, we are not using their real names.
