Presidential Decree Withdrawing Reservation on African Charter Issued re: Age
of Marriage |
12 February 2015 |
Egypt President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi issued
on Wednesday 11/2/2015 a presidential decree to withdraw Egypt's reservation
to a provision of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child,
1990. The Charter stipulates that children are
entitled to protection from all forms of exploitation and business practices
that may inflict the risk on them, their health or would disrupt their
education, said Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef. Egypt had reservations to the provision 21/2
as it was not compatible with the Egyptian law, which was stating that the
legal age of marriage is 18 for men and 16 for women, the spokesman added. As Egypt changed the law to set the marriage
age for both women and men to be 18, it became available to withdraw the
reservations, Youssef said. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ |
