Expanding the influence of Arab women as leaders in the Women Peace and Security agenda
09 March, 4:45 PM-6:00 PM

With urgent programs on women, peace, and security being launched from October
to January of this year, including the Justice for Salwa is Justice for All
campaign (which demands justice for assassinations and attacks against women
human rights defenders, and asks for better protection and security for women to
participate at all levels of advocacy), the 59th session is a crucial moment in
the international women's movement and a critical opportunity for leaders from
the Arab region to lend their voices in reviewing the Beijing Declaration and
Platform for Action twenty years after its adoption and look at the way forward
in achieving goals on gender equality, human rights, and peace. In previous
years, Karama successfully garnered media attention and political engagement to
build awareness of the priorities for women in the Arab region and share
experiences and insights from the work women's rights leaders were doing on the
ground. Karama has hosted delegations representing 13 countries, putting
women's rights leaders and activists face-to-face with US congress members, the
Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communication to President Obama
-Ben Rhodes-, academic leaders such as Isobel Coleman of the Council for
Foreign Relations and Jane Harman -Director, President and CEO of the Wilson
Center-, Special Rapporteurs on Violence against Women, Human Rights Officers
from the OHCHR, as well as members of the Security Council. Karama's
delegations have also hosted panels convening governments, international
activists, and UN representatives and sharing strategic research and
recommendations on topics ranging from women's political participation to
challenges to women's security following the Arab uprisings. Recently, in
parallel with this work, Karama and its partners launched the Arab Regional
Network on Women, Peace, and Security. This network is an outcome of a
strategic training on women, peace, and security held in cooperation with the
European Union and the League of Arab States. Since then, the network has
continued to build momentum at the regional-level, issuing a ten-point
manifesto calling on the international community for support on ten main issue
areas, and at the national-level, working to develop national action plans on
UN SCR 1325.

11 March, 09:00 AM - 05:30 PM
Wyndham New Yorker Hotel, 481 8th Avenue, New York, NY 10001
In 2015, a number of global milestones -the twentieth anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action (PfA), the Post-2015 Development Agenda and anticipated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a unique opportunity to ensure that the business community commits, contributes and is a key partner to achieving gender equality. The WEPs Annual Event will bring together leaders from business, Government, the UN and civil society to reflect on the implications of the PfA and the re-visioned SDGs, and project an action agenda driven by the WEPs business champions and constituency. Held on 10-11 March 2015 in New York, the event will also focus on concrete steps and actions that business can take to advance gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community. In the last 15 years, there has been an increasing awareness about the
importance of working with men and boys to promote gender equality, women's
empowerment and sexual and reproductive health. As a result many initiatives,
including those that show much promise, have been developed and implemented.
The time has come to scale up these promising practices and reach more for
greater impact. The aim of this panel is to raise awareness, highlight key
successes, challenges and the question of whats next going forward in the Post
2015 era, in the area of engaging men and boys for gender equality and SRHR. In
particular the panel would like to highlight the importance of scaling up and
institutionalizing this work so that governments, as duty bearers, integrate
the work on engaging men and boys, into their national policies, programmes and
initiatives, as a key strategy for contributing to gender equality, women and
girls empowerment and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
