Street Harassment – Know Your
Legal Rights
Street harassment affects the safety and
wellbeing of women and LGBTQ people worldwide. It can take many forms,
including catcalling, groping or stalking, and leads to fear and intimidation.
Global research shows
that a majority of women have endured this form of gender-based
violence.
Hollaback!
is a movement to end street harassment powered by a network of local activists
around the world. The guide will be used to help victims of street harassment
understand their legal rights, whether those rights have been violated and what
action they can take.
Street Harassment: Know Your Rights identifies
relevant laws related to street harassment and outlines the legal recourse
available to victims in 36 jurisdictions: Argentina, Australia, Belgium,
Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, India,
Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, South Africa,
Turkey, USA (Atlanta, Athens, Baltimore, Berkeley, Chicago, Columbia (MO),
Jacksonville (NC), Minneapolis and St. Paul, New York, Ohio, Philadelphia,
Portland (ME), Virginia).
In each location, the guide provides an
overview of answers to key questions, including: Is street harassment against
the law? How should street harassment be reported? What is likely to happen to
the person I complain about?
This Guide was produced for Hollaback! by TrustLaw in
partnership with DLA Piper and a number
of other law firms and in-house corporate legal teams
