Periodically estimating the incidence of global unintended pregnancy can
help demonstrate the need for and impact of family planning programs and
services. In this article, authors Gilda Sedgh, Susheela Singh, and Rubina
Hussain from the Guttmacher Institute estimate the rates of all intended and
unintended pregnancies in 2012 across all major geographic regions and
sub-regions of the world, and also assess trends using data from 2008 and 1995.
The authors also provide recommendations for strengthening policies and
programs that expand access to life-saving family planning programs and
services.

Evidence of
how consequences of unintended pregnancy vary across regions and populations
can play an important role in motivating and effectively allocating investments
to improve maternal and child health and, in the long term, social and economic
development.
