Latin America & The Caribbean - Declaration of Pachuca - Strengthening Efforts to Prevent Violence Against Women

28/05/2014 - During the closing session of the Hemispheric Forum Belém do Pará +20: "Prevention of violence against women: Good practices and proposals for the future", the Pachuca Declaration: “Strengthening efforts to prevent violence against women " was adopted. The Declaration is based on proposals and recommendations on how to effectively prevent violence against women.

Organized by the CIM/OAS, the Forum took place from May 14th to 16th in the city of Pachuca, with the support of the Government of Hidalgo. Over two days of intense work, the Ministers of Women from Latin America and the Caribbean, experts of the Mechanism to Follow Up on the Implementation of the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI), United Nations, civil society and academia representatives reaffirmed their commitment to end violence and designed strategies in public policy, education and communication for gender equality and violence prevention.

Through this statement, a regional platform for action has been established, which sets guidelines for the implementation of strategies to strengthen the work of the States in violence prevention at national and regional levels. It also emphasizes the commitments made by the States upon ratification of the Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence against Women, known as Belém do Pará Convention. The forum was held in the framework of the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Convention, which was ratified by 32 of the 34 OAS Member States.
