CARE, a feature documentary currently in production, is a recipient of a 2014 MacArthur Grant. It exposes the cracks in the elder care system, by telling the intimate stories of four home health aides who, despite spending their days taking care of elderly clients, earn too little support their own families.   CARE also delves deep into the stories of several aging clients and their families, who struggle with finding and paying for quality care.

Through these stories CARE reveals the deep humanity and poignancy of care work, as well as the challenges and frustrations faced by elders, their families and care workers.  It reveals the outlines of an impending care crisis, while highlighting the commitment of people on many sides of the issue to improve elder care in America.

The goal of the film is to stimulate a national conversation about elder care and to provoke new ideas about organizing and compensating quality care.

The filmmakers come to this film with several strong perspectives:

·  Elders have a right to dignity and quality care;

·  Care workers deserve to earn a living wage; and

·  Families should not have to go bankrupt to provide care to a loved one.

Beyond those viewpoints, which have influenced the choice of subjects and stories, the film poses questions rather than answering them.  The characters in the film will have differing opinions about both the nature of the issues and the right approach to addressing them. Their perspectives will provide a variety of starting points for audiences to discuss the issues.
