THE ROAD TO DEVELOPMENT JUSTICE
Inequality is now so high that a woman garment worker earns
less in a year than the Walton family earns every second. Climate change
will force 50 million people to migrate from Bangladesh alone. The global crises of inequality and climate
are both caused by our global economy. Together they threaten the future of
humanity. It's time for a new model - a model of Development Justice.
On 21st July 2014, Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and
Development (APWLD) launched a video infographic "The Road to
Development Justice". This video explains Development
Justice and the shifts civil society in the Global South demand. It highlights
statistics on inequalities between countries, between the rich and the poor
and between men and women. It then presents what solutions governments can
commit towards achieving universal social services, universal public
health, and universal public education.
For example, less than 1% of the total value of extractive
industries globally is enough to cover the annual cost of universal access
to clean, renewable energy. Just 5% of High Net Worth Individuals’
wealth is enough to cover the annual cost of universal social protection.
Just 1% of the global military budget would ensure universal public
education.

The video launch kick starts the Global Days of Action for
Development Justice in which farmers, workers, indigenous peoples,
migrants, women, youth, and other groups from over 14 countries will hold
simultaneous events including teach-ins; public forums; media briefings to
call for a more just and sustainable world.
