CALL FOR VOTE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS 25^TH MAY2014

The future of Europe can only be grounded in guaranteeing and implementing the fundamental human rights for women and men

Elections to the European Parliament are due to take place in May 2014, throughout the EU-28 countries. Today the ascendancy of conservative forces on the EU project is heavy with negative consequences for peoples’ rights and freedom and turns the declarations on peace, security and democracy of European leaders into empty shells. Capitalism, patriarchy and militarism still draw their legitimacy from the 2005 constitutional framework, despite the disastrous situation they have engendered: economic crisis, drastic austerity policies, unbridled competition, dismantling of public services, market forces governing nations, increases in military expenditures and social disarmament. Foreign and migration policies disregard the peoples’ right to security, dignity, self-determination, and to most fundamental rights, with women being the first victims. Women are also the first to suffer from unemployment, job insecurity, poor healthcare access, new forms of slavery. The rise of communitarianisms and religious fundamentalisms are constant threats against women’s sexual and reproductive rights.

The European Feminist Initiative IFE-EFI calls to vote on the 25^th of May for candidates, lists and parties who promote the following:

Ø REAL EQUALITY between women and men as a founding principle for Europe, the adoption of measures and policies to reach this goal in both the public and private spheres and the promotion of gender equality on all agendas.

Ø REAL DEMOCRACY that enables women and men to take full part of the decisions that shape their life and the future of their countries.

Ø Radical CHANGE of the European policies based on profit and wealth accumulation, into policies focused on human development.

Ø STRICT non-interference of religious structures into State affairs, instituting women’s rights as UNIVERSAL human rights and rejecting any violation of those rights in the name of culture, tradition or religion.

Ø CRIMINALIZATION of VIOLENCE against women, abolition of prostitution and recognition of the right of women to decide over their own body.

Ø Free movement of persons and right to full CITIZENSHIP for all living on the European territory; right to ASYLUM for victims of sexual violence.

Ø Elimination of all weapons of mass destruction and reduction of military expenditures until total DISARMAMENT to ensure that Europe becomes a driving force to promote and set up peace and security. Military interventions those recent years, “in the name of Democracy”, played an important part in the growth of religious fundamentalisms in our societies and at State level.

Ø Submission of any partnership agreement with neighbouring countries to the respect of the basic FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS of both women and men.

Ø A European foreign policy aimed at fostering peace, development and INDEPENDENCE of peoples.
