When a woman dies in
pregnancy or childbirth, her community loses not just a mother but a person, and all of
her gifts, skills, and potential contributions. The loss, too, is hers as well as her
family’s and the world’s. She — like every woman, man, child, and newborn — had
the right to
lifesaving health care. She had the right to her full span
of life; she had the right to all
of the opportunities and joys that life can offer. She had
the right to the love
of her children, family, and community. Her needless
death robs her, and the world, of all of that, and so much more.
