Cities & the Informal Economy

Cities & the Informal Economy

Inclusive Cities Work Better

Informal workers' incomes may be low -
but cumulatively their activities contribute significantly
to the local and national economy.

In most cities in the global South, the majority of those who work, work in the informal economy. For most informal workers, the home is the primary workplace or is used for storage/preparation. Shelter and basic services such as water and sanitation are issues critical to livelihoods.

Cities that recognize informal workers and involve them in planning help create cleaner, greener, more socially responsive and more vibrant cities.
