AFGHANISTAN - PRESIDENT ORDERS CHANGES TO NEW VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN LAW - NOT PROTECT ABUSERS

By Ghanizada - February 17 2014

Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Monday ordered to amend the draft of new Afghan criminal prosecution code, officials in presidential palace said.

This comes as the parliament of Afghanistan passed a new criminal prosecution code that would protect perpetrators of domestic violence, child abuse, forced marriages and marital rape.

The draft code was presented to Afghan president Hamid Karzai after it was passed by Afghan parliament, which created concerns among the human rights orgnaizations.

Over 1 million people around the world also signed a petition urging him to veto the proposed law, which would protect perpetrators of domestic violence, child abuse, forced marriages and marital rape.

In addition to the million-person petition more than 179,000 people also sent President Hamid Karzai personal messages asking him not to sign the new rule into law.

However, Aimal Faizi, spokesman for president Karzai said, “The new Afghan criminal prosecution code won’t come into force unless new amendments are made in the proposed draft by Ministry of Justice of Afghanistan.”

Domestic violence is one of the biggest challenges which is still being faced by the Afghan women who have made great strides since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001.Girls and women were barred from attending school or doing job and were forced to stay at home and cover their heads under the Taliban regime.
