MOVING TOWARDS BEIJING + 20

 

In 2014, this year, there will be gatherings in the official UN Regions as described below, for BEIJING + 20 Government Surveys & Reports, and Regional Official Government Review Sessions and Outcomes.

 

There will again be NGO organized Beijing + 20 Reviews, and Shadow Reports.

 

It may be of interest to consider your country's Beijing + 15 Report, and gender NGO realities, and to monitor the evolving BEIJING + 20 PROCESS in 2014, leading to the Official Beijing + 20 Review in 2015.

59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women / Beijing+20 (2015)

The fifty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York, tentatively scheduled for 9-20 March 2015. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world attend the session.

The Commission will undertake a review of progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 20 years after its adoption at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995. The review (Beijing+20) will also include the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly, the first five-year assessment conducted after the adoption of the Platform for Action, which highlighted further actions and initiatives.

The session will also address current challenges that affect the implementation of the Platform for Action, as well as opportunities for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women in the post-2015 development agenda.

The review will be conducted at national, regional and global levels. The regional commissions of the United Nations will undertake regional reviews.

15-YEAR REVIEW OF THE IMLEMENTATION OF THE BEIJING DECLARATION & PLATFORM FOR ACTION

Report of the 54th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women

       From 1-12 March 2010, the Commission on the Status of Women undertook a fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly.   Emphasis was placed on the sharing of experiences and good practices, with a view to overcoming remaining obstacles and new challenges, including those related to the Millennium Development Goals.  Member States, representatives of non-governmental organizations and of UN entities participated in the session.  A series of parallel events provided additional opportunities for information exchange and networking.

       National and regional review processes fed into the global review process.

       The General Assembly marked the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in a commemorative meeting during CSW.
