International Women’s Human Rights Education Institute & CEDAW for Change Institute - 2014

Are you a women’s human rights defender?  Do you want to increase your understanding of women’s human rights, and learn how to use the UN Human Rights system to support your activism?

 

Join other international activists, scholars, community workers, NGO representatives, lawyers and educators in learning about women’s human rights education and activism at the Women’s Human Rights Education Institute (WHRI), a collaboration between the Centre for Women’s Studies in Education/University of Toronto, and the Fundación Justicia y Género of Costa Rica.

 

We are now accepting applications for our 2014 programs In Kathmandu, Nepal, and in Toronto, Canada:

 

International Women’s Human Rights Education Institute 2014

August 4 - 15, 2014 in Kathmandu, Nepal

After ten years of offering the WHRI in Toronto, we are very excited to announce our first two-week residential intensive program in Nepal!  Develop confidence in your understanding of women’s human rights mechanisms and visions, while learning from local activists and organizations in Kathmandu, as well as other international participants and facilitators in the program!

 

 Overview:  The WHRI focusses on understanding and utilizing CEDAW, and also looks more broadly at the herstory of the International Women’s Human Rights movement, human rights training and education, feminist frameworks of analysis, self-care and activist sustainability, and with a special focus on the intersections between CEDAW and Indigenous women’s rights, and women and peacebuilding, including the five UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security. This program will involve a short online pre-course, the two-week residential program in Kathmandu, and online follow-up post-training. 

 (Note: This replaces the 6-week WHRI usually held in Toronto for 2014)

May 24 - 31, 2014 in Toronto, Canada.

Centre for Women’s Studies in Education (CWSE), Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT)

 

This Institute will focus on understanding and utilizing the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as a tool for activism, feminist analysis and awareness-raising on women’s human rights.  Weekend workshop on the UN human rights system (May 24-25), followed by a five-day intensive on CEDAW (May 27-31).
