INUIT RETURN OF THE SUN FESTIVAL IN JANUARY - INUIT WOMEN

 

An Inuit woman tends a traditional qulliq for the Festival of the Return of the Sun. In former times, the lamp was a multi-purpose tool. The Inuit used the kudlik for illuminating and heating their tents and igloos, for melting snow, cooking, and drying their clothes. Today it is mainly used for ceremonial purposes.

Northern Canada Inuit territory -Near the end of November, the sun disappears. Mid January, the sun returns, and the people celebrate with the RETURN OF THE SUN FESTIVAL.
