CHINA - SURVEY ON WOMEN'S BODY IMAGE & HEALTH

December 9, 2013 - Editor: Sun Xi

Up to 95.8 percent of Chinese women polled agree that being thin is not the defining standard of physical beauty and that a well-proportioned body is better, according to a newly released report on urban women's body image and health.

The Chinese Urban Women's Physique Health Survey, conducted by the Huakun Women's Life Survey Center under the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), collected 1,952 valid responses from ten cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Chengdu, Kunming, Harbin, Hangzhou, and Nanjing.

The survey aimed to learn more about how modern Chinese women perceive the issue of body image and health in order to provide guidance on the matter.

About 75.4 percent of the women fell between the ages of 30 and 45.

The survey shows that almost all the women said that a woman's beauty is not just in physical appearances but also in health and attitude. Over 70 percent are very concerned about their appearance and nearly 90 percent agreed that a healthy lifestyle is the way to physical and psychological health.

Up to 86.5 percent said that women need to start taking care of their bodies at the age of 24 and 85.6 percent said women should lose weight if they put on too much weight during pregnancy.

Over 80 percent said that they believe women who are in better physical shape are more popular in the workplace and are better at socializing, relationships and marriage. Over half the women believe improving one's appearance can increase confidence and is helpful in career and relationships.

Among those polled, 35 percent of them were satisfied with their bodies, 22.2 percent were dissatisfied and 5.2 percent said they were very dissatisfied.

The survey also revealed that the top three problems in women's body concepts are a mistaken belief that healthy weight management means losing weight, not knowing their own measurements and being skeptical of products that may help them.

The HuaKun Women's Life Survey Center is a non-profit social organization and China's only women's survey organization. It works for women, women's work and government decision-making. It conducts many surveys on women, including an annual urban women's life quality survey, annual urban women's consumption survey, surveys from the ACWF, and commercial surveys.
