World YWCA is re-launching the End Child, Early and Forced Marriage petition, which
will be presented at the UN Human Rights Council session in March 2014 by
Mereso Kiluso, a former child bride from Tanzania.

The human rights violation that is child, early and forced marriage is on the rise and its number is expected to double by 2020 as the youth population continues to expand rapidly in Asia and Africa. Child marriage is a not only a violation of human rights, it is also a major risk factor for adolescent pregnancy – itself a leading cause of maternal and child mortality. Furthermore, girls who are married too soon are typically denied the right to finish their studies, perpetuating the vicious cycle of poverty that is linked to a lack of education and poor health.
