PAKISTAN - WHO'S TELLING OUR STORY? A SITUATION ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN MEDIA IN PAKISTAN

On July 10, 2013,Uks of Pakistan, in collaboration with DANIDA conducted a nationwide launch of its report, titled, “Who’s Telling Our Story? A Situation Analysis of Women in Media in Pakistan”. The report outlined the activities, the experiences and the major milestones of the project “More Women in Media”. Apart from this main report, an election report titled “Fair, Balanced and Unbiased. A Gendered Analysis of Pakistan’s Media Reporting of Elections 2013” and a revised Gender Sensitive Code of Ethics was also launched at the event.

The main report, written by Ms. Tahira Abdullah, contained hitherto unknown information, collected from the review sessions, consultation meetings and counseling sessions held with the students, teachers and media personnel. It emphasized the need for gender sensitivity in the media and presented a list of insensitive vocabulary typically used by the media when talking about women. It also shed light on the disparity in the number of women studying media and the number of women joining it as a career. The opinion of students, teachers and parents regarding this disparity were also recorded in the report along with other issues related to women and media.

The report on election coverage, which was simultaneously launched with the main report was an additional task undertaken by Uks in anticipation of the approaching 2013 elections. Based on the work of the research team and media monitors, the report analyzed through a gender lens, the print and electronic media’s coverage of women during the elections.

The panelists of the report launch held in Islamabad included Ms. Tahira Abdullah, Ms. Fouzia Shahid, and Ms. Farzana Ali, and was moderated by Dr. Salman Asif. The Danish Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Ole E. Moesby was the distinguished guest at the event and Ms. Kishwar Naheed was the chairperson. These esteemed panelists spoke about the importance and relevance of the report commenting on various issues including the glass ceiling and sticky floors phenomenon, as well as work place harassment and unjust treatment of women in media. Ms. Abdullah emphasized the need for trusting your daughters, and presented a comprehensive overview of the report. Ms. Farzana Ali, Bureau Chief Aaj TV Peshawar, shared with the audience her journey in the field of media; the triumphs and the disappointments. The Danish Ambassador and Ms. Kishwar Naheed also spoke on the occasion, commending the efforts of Uks and advocating for more gender sensitivity in the media.

In Karachi the program was moderated by Ms. Afia Salam and the panel of guests included writers, Zubaida Mustafa, and Ms. Bina Shah, Director News Express TV Mr. Mazhar Abbas, and Head of Mass Communication in Federal Urdu University Karachi, Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan. The panelists commented on the growing disparity between the number of women studying media and those pursuing it professionally. Moreover, a discussion was held about segregation in the workplace and also on the need for exploring more avenues in media. 

Similarly in Peshawar, the moderator Mr. Ali Imran, introduced the panelists which included the Chief Guest Mr. Shahjehan Syed, HOD Mass Communications and Gender Studies Peshawar University, Ms. Anoosh Khan who is a professor of Gender Studies at Peshawar University, journalists Ms. Sadia Qasim Shah, Ms. Aneela Shaheen, Ms. Nadia Saboohi and also a student from Peshawar Universities Mass Communication Department, Ms. Khadija Kanwal.
