Many Latin American countries have entered into a relative period of
peace but nevertheless the statistics show extremely high rates of
social violence and GBV. Despite regional variations, VAW can be
characterized as an enormous phenomenon and social problem all over
Latin America and the Caribbean.
Due to the political and humanitarian situation, Haitian women and
girls are especially vulnerable for human rights violations and
violence. The dramatic earthquake in January 2010 bereaved,
traumatized, injured and displaced wide parts of the Haitian people. In
Argentina, where every 30 hours a woman dies due to domestic violence,
a law exists to prevent, sanction and eradicate VAW. But this law
remains widely unknown to a large part of the female population and
very few cases of VAW are brought to trial. In Colombia, the internal
armed conflict has an enormous impact in particular on women, who are
victims of sexual violence and, perpetrators usually remain unpunished.
Activities
- Organizing exhibitions and roundtables with partner organizations and
governmental institutions on the implementation of UNSCR 1325
(Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, Paraguay, Costa Rica); further lobbying
and campaigning for the resolution in selected countries
- Production of the documentary film «La Diosa Herida» about Haitian
Women, produced by PeaceWoman Lizette Vila, will be an important
document on the situation of VAW in Haiti.
- Organizing workshops and roundtables on VAW with grass roots
organizations (Argentina, Colombia)
