USA - MOTHERS UNITE TO RAISE GUN
DANGER AWARENESS
October 20 2013 - In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense has launched a campaign to push for stronger policies surrounding gun ownership.
The week long campaign kicked off Oct. 19, calling on key members of Congress.
Elizabeth Crecente's daughter Jennifer was a victim of domestic violence killed by her boyfriend Justin.
"When he got into the wooded area he had a sawed off shotgun in the woods. He made her get on her knees and shot her execution style with a bird shot," said Crecente.
She is banding with other mother to tell Congress to focus on loopholes involving the sale of guns at shows and on the internet.
"I know how easy it is to obtain a gun. Justin bought a gun from a friend. The friend had a gun because his family was involved in drug dealing," said Crecente.
In 2011, firearms were the most common weapon used by males to murder females.
This year alone there have been eight homicides in Travis County, three involved guns.
Constable Carol B. Lopez says that type of violence is what scares most women from getting help.
"They are threatened saying if you leave I will kill you," said Lopez.
Every year Lopez served more than 1,000 protective orders to save women.
"Protective orders are designed to protect women. Unfortunately around the state and around the U.S. that is the most dangerous time is taking the first step," said Lopez.
Crecente hopes more action against guns at the state and federal level will reduce domestic violence. An effort to keep women from living the same story as Jennifer.
"It is doubly sad for me because she lost her power," Crecente.
