Written by a previous UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, this landmark Study was requested by the then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Mary Robinson. The United Nations Mandate for the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief includes a gender specific dimension:

"to continue to apply a gender perspective, inter alia, through the identification of gender-specific abuses, in the reporting process, including in information collection and in recommendations."

UN Study on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the Status of
Women from the Viewpoint of Religion and Traditions

"Discrimination and intolerance against women, supposedly prescribed by religion or tradition, must be resolutely condemned. To that end, the Special Rapporteur reiterates his recommendation that a seminar should be held on the status of women from the standpoint of religion, traditions and human rights, so as not only to identify manifestations of discrimination and intolerance, and also to formulate practical recommendations and a plan of action for eradicating such practices."

Mr. Abdelfattah Amor, Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Author of the UN Study on the Status of Women, Freedom of Religion or Belief, and Traditions.
