‘The Damage Done

Inequality, Poverty and Vulnerability

6th – 8th May 2014

Institute of Development Studies, Brighton, UK

The Institute of Development Studies is  convening a major international conference on the relationships between inequality, poverty, and vulnerability.

Inequality has re-entered the international development debate with great energy. When there are food banks in industrialised countries, the World Economic Forum “bemoaning inequality” (the 2011 Davos meeting included an estimated 70 billionaires) and “Inequality for All” making a former US Secretary for Labour, Robert Reich, a film star, something extraordinary is happening. The conference provides a timely opportunity to evaluate the evidence on the ways in which inequality affects development and particularly to establish what its role is in the reproduction of poverty and the generation of vulnerability.

Call for Papers

Contributions are invited for free standing papers, or proposals for panels on the main strands of the conference:

•             Assembling the most recent evidence on how inequality relates to poverty and vulnerability.

•             Exploring the dynamics of inequalities and how they intersect across multiple dimensions and multiple levels.

•             Considering what policy options are suitable for dealing with the interplay of inequality, poverty and vulnerability

For further details on possible themes for papers and panels please see below.

In order to propose a Panel at this conference, please submit a proposal for a panel by 27th September 2013 to povertyandinequality@ids.ac.uk.

The panel proposal should consist of a title and short abstract for the panel session (300 words), and where possible it should indicate a list of likely papers and authors who have provisionally agreed to be included in the panel (no more than four papers per panel).

The deadline for abstracts for individual papers is 4th November 2013.  Please send your abstract (no more than 500 words), or any enquiries about this event, to povertyandinequality@ids.ac.uk.

We will aim to confirm which panels and papers have been accepted for the conference by early December 2013.

Please register your interest by email now to be kept updated about the conference and to receive updates.

Thank you
