The divorce rate in China has outstripped the marriage rate for the first time in the past decade, according to a report released by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs recently.

The report compared figures from 2011 and 2012, showing that 13.236 million couples registered for marriage in 2012, representing an increase of 1.6 percent, as opposed to 3.104 million couples who got divorced, representing an increase of eight percent.

Chinese people's marriage values have undergone huge changes as the society has become more open and progressive in recent years. People are beginning to attach more importance to marriage equality and many now consider divorce a matter of personal choice.
