Opening Message from UN Women

As the 2015 target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) approaches, Intergovernmental and UN-led processes are well under way to inform and design a post-2015 development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To contribute to the ongoing debate of the future development framework, UN Women lays out its vision for a transformative framework that addresses the structural impediments to gender equality and the achievement of women’s rights in its paper. Launched on 26 June 2013, the paper calls for a specific commitment to achieving gender equality, women’s rights and women’s empowerment in the post-2015 framework and SDGs, as well as robust mainstreaming of gender equality concerns across all parts of the post-2015 development agenda.

To hear feedback on the proposed standalone gender equality goal, we are delighted to welcome you to this online discussion on A Standalone Gender Equality Goal in Post-2015. This discussion begins on 27 June and will continue for four weeks.

The aim of the discussion is to be as broad and open as possible, in order to enable a multitude of voices to be heard from academia, media, civil society organizations (including national and international non-governmental organizations), the private sector, governments, and the UN System. You are strongly encouraged to share not only your views, but also engage with and bring forth the voices of the constituencies you represent, who may themselves not be able to participate online.  The recommendations emerging from your contributions will be summarized and shared as inputs for strategies to inform UN Women’s future work on post-2015 agenda and SDGs.

To kick off the discussion, we invite you to reflect on the discussion questions < click here >.
