"Although gender statistics remains a strange concept to the public, it
has already been brought into the national statistical systems," said
Zhang. "
Gender statistics is an area that cuts across traditional fields of statistics
to identify, produce and disseminate statistics that reflect the realities of
the lives of women and men, and policy issues relating to gender.
Statistics and indicators on the situation of women and men are needed to
describe their roles in society, economy and family, formulate and monitor
policies and plans, monitor changes, and inform the public.

Zhang said that she considers that the figures are a convincing sign of the
country's efforts to promote the basic national policy of gender equality and
women's progress. The National Bureau of Statistics and ministries such as the
Ministry of Education, Health and Human Resources and Social Security should
work hand in hand to perfect the statistical system, pushing it to describe
more accurately and fully the activities and characteristics of the whole
population so as to implement the Program for the Development of Chinese
Women (2011-2020) and the Program for the Development of Chinese
Children (2011-2020).
Zhang also suggested establishing an official data base for gender statistics
to enable the public to access such information and put it to good use.
