SYRIAN UPRISING
Candle Light Vigil in Solidarity with
Syrian Women Refugees and Their Children

Press release | ABAAD: March 15,
2013 has marked the second anniversary of the painful events in Syria, and
since the onset of the Syrian uprising the number of refugees in Lebanon are
increasing and their suffering is getting worse at all levels.
Conflict and post conflict
situations almost always affect women and girls who become the direct and
indirect victims. Syrian women and girls refugees are suffering the ugliest
forms of exploitation and degradation, economically, socially and sexually.
We, as activist and civil
society actors stand in solidarity with and by our Syrian sisters and their
families, and call on their right to live in dignity. We call on the civil and
international organizations to detect, document and publish all the reports
about cases of exploitation among which are early and forced marriages and
trafficking in women for the purpose of prostitution, in order to shed light on
the case and to find tangible and effective solutions for.
The exploitation of refugees in
Lebanon as in all countries of asylum is a blot of shame on the forehead of
humanity. We all must shoulder our responsibilities towards this racism and
sectarian incitement, and call for humanitarian solidarity with women and child
refugees.
In the commemoration of the
International Women’s Day, we salute all women, men, boys and girls around the
world who have shown their solidarity and support in more than 30 countries. We
thank everyone for lightening a candle may it illuminates the darkness of the
bitter reality.
