Kenya - Saving Mothers
& Babies, One Health Voucher at a Time - Video
In
Kenya, many pregnant women lack access to skilled medical care. Every year,
8,000 women die and approximately 160,000 are injured or disabled during
pregnancy or childbirth in the absence of quality care. To help overcome
barriers that may prevent women from getting the care they need—like high
out-of-pocket fees, poorly staffed and equipped facilities, and costly
transportation—the Kenyan government began an innovative program that gives eligible
poor women a “kadi” (“voucher” in Swahili) to be used like a coupon for
prenatal and delivery services from approved private and public reproductive
healthcare providers.
