YWCA/YMCA Week of Prayer & World Fellowship 2012
The YWCA/YMCA Week of Prayer is a tradition dating back to 1904. Each
year in the month of November, the YWCA and YMCA movements issue a joint call
for prayer. The theme for this year’s Week of Prayer is “Violence will not have
the last word - Working for change that respects rights and dignity”, and it
will take place from November 11 to 17.
Keeping in line with the World YWCA Strategic Framework (2012-2015), the Week of
Prayer Booklet invites us to re-examine our attitudes towards violence and
where and how it occurs. Once violence happens, it is likely to be repeated.
The real problem lies in the fact that too often violence is considered and
accepted to be a private matter and not a criminal offence. Culture and
traditions have been consciously or unconsciously manipulated to become tools
of aggression that support abuse of power. Today, acts of violence as described
in the daily reflections of this booklet are justified by men, and sometimes
women, under the auspices of "traditional practice".
This year’s Week of Prayer booklet presents a rich variety of
perspectives from all over the world, which emphasise the interconnection
between various forms of violence and peace with justice; sexual and
reproductive health and rights and HIV; harmful traditional practices; climate
change and women’s rights; family violence; and prevention of violence against
vulnerable groups. Throughout the week let the scriptures guide us in
committing ourselves to offer the gift of peace. It is up to us to make a
change. Let us build a culture of peace, recognising that peace begins with ME.
