The following paper on the CEDAW General Recommendation on
Women in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations was presented by Mavic
Cabrera-Balleza, International Coordinator of the Global Network of Women
Peacebuilders during a policy briefing with CEDAW Experts, Member States and
civil society in New York on July 24, 2012 sponsored by the Permanent Mission
of Switzerland to the UN. The discussions on the draft of the CEDAW General Recommendation
on Women in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations is currently ongoing. When
adopted, the CEDAW General Recommendation on Women in Conflict and
Post-conflict Situations will be a strong complementary accountability
mechanism to UNSCR 1325 and 1820 on Women, Peace and Security as well as the
supporting resolutions UNSCR 1888, 1889 and 1960. It will provide appropriate
and authoritative guidance to States Parties on the measures to be adopted to
ensure full compliance with their obligations to protect, respect and fulfill
women’s human rights during times of armed conflict and in all peace-building
processes, including the immediate aftermath of conflict and long-term
post-conflict reconstruction.
