PROPOSED EMERGING ISSUE FOR 57th SESSION OF THE UN COMMISION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN - CSW

At a meeting of UK Women’s NGOs, held at the University of Bristol on July 10th, 2012, it was agreed that  they would propose to the UK Government that it designates WIDOWHOOD as an emerging issue for the UN Commission on the Status of Women 57 – 2013.

WIDOWS FOR PEACE THROUGH DEMOCRACY ASKS WOMEN’S NGO’s AROUND THE WORLD TO MAKE THIS REQUEST FOR WIDOWHOOD / WIDOWS TO BE AN EMERGING ISSUE AT CSW 57.

The request would be to Governments, and with inquiry on the protocol to send this Emerging Issues & Widows request to the Country’s Mission to the UN in New York.

This UK Women's NGO's decision was made in view of the unprecedented increase in the numbers of widows of all ages, due to armed conflict, violence, revolution, HIV and AIDS, and harmful traditional practices. This is in recognition of their extreme poverty, in developing and conflict-afflicted countries and their vulnerability to abuse and violence. Also noted was widows' crucial roles as sole supporters of families, and their potential contribution towards development, peace and democracy.
