Members of women's organizations protest in Taipei for Japan apology to WW II Comfort Women.
The letters were sent on August 15, 2012, marking the 67th
anniversary of Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. In addition, the
year 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the appeal for apology and compensation
from Japan for Taiwanese comfort women. There are currently less than ten
elderly women living in Taiwan who served as comfort women during World War II.
The average age of the women is 88.
'Comfort women' are girls and women from all over Japan's occupied territories
at the time who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military during
World War II. The majority of the women were from Korea, China, Philippines,
Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
