BELMONT, MA (March 6, 2012) Award-winning freelance photojournalist and multimedia producer Paula Lerner died this morning after a long battle with cancer.

A freelance photojournalist since 1985, much of her work focused on issues facing women, children, and girls.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2004, and after surgery and treatment Lerner resumed photography. But five years later cancer metastasized to her bones and organs, which today claimed her life.

While co-authoring the book"Why We Walk: The Inspirational Journey Toward a Cure for Breast Cancer"with Deb Murphy, Lerner was diagnosed with the very same disease.

Lerner won an Emmy Award in 2010 for her feature "Behind The Veil,"an in-depth multimedia piece about the lives of women in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
