European Women's Lobby - EWL
[
Hosted by S&D’s member of the
Disability Intergroup Iratxe García Pérez MEP,
this event is the second attempt to step up a European response to the crime of
violence against women with disabilities, following the meeting of the
Disability Intergroup in July 2010.
The European Parliament said in
its resolution of 26 April 2007 on the situation
of women with disabilities in the European Union that nearly 80 per cent of
women with disabilities are victims of psychological and physical abuse, and at
greater risk of sexual violence. The daily testimonies of women with
disabilities show that many of them are still to be found on the fringes of all
human rights movements and remain bogged down in a clearly disadvantaged
position within society. The failure to pinpoint the specificities of the
intersection of gender and disability results in severe under-reporting of the
reality faced by women with disabilities in the family environment and public
life.
The hearing will therefore
consolidate the knowledge collected over the years by the feminist and disability
organisations and bring an international dimension to the discussion.
The hearing is open to the
public. You are kindly asked to register with the European Disability Forum for
participation. Participants who do not have a European Parliament access badge
must provide their name, number of passport or ID and date of birth tojanina.arsenjeva@edf-feph.org
(tel. +32 2 282 4602).
