The Mobile Alliance
for Maternal Action (MAMA) is engaging an innovative global community to
deliver vital health information to new and expectant mothers through mobile
phones.
MAMA
is a public-private partnership launched in May 2011 by founding partners
United States Agency for International Development and Johnson & Johnson
with supporting partners – the United Nations Foundation, mHealth Alliance and
BabyCenter.
MAMA
founding partners are making a three-year, $10 million investment to create and
strengthen programs in three countries – Bangladesh, India and South Africa –
and to enhance global capability of new and existing mobile health information
programs for moms in those countries and beyond.
Who We Are
MAMA
is mobilizing the collective resources and expertise of its partners.
The
alliance was developed in collaboration with the White House Office of Science
and Technology Policy and the U.S. Department of State.
How We Work
MAMA
is employing a complementary approach that includes targeted efforts in three
countries and a global capacity building component.
First,
MAMA is delivering mobile health information services in Bangladesh, India and
South Africa – countries with elevated maternal and infant mortality and
morbidity and high use of mobile phones. MAMA is partnering with local
governments, mobile operators and non-government organizations in these
countries to ensure from the start that its efforts can be expanded or
replicated to reach the most mothers possible. MAMA programs in these countries
will benefit from innovative and enduring business models with multiple revenue
streams, while ensuring free or affordable services for low-income subscribers.
Second,
in addition to its collaborative efforts in Bangladesh, India and South Africa,
MAMA is also enhancing global capability of agencies that create and develop
mobile health information programs for moms.
