MOZAMBIQUE - SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN AGAINST SEXIST ADVERTISING

From Graca Samo, Executive Director

Forum Mulher - Mozambique

It is with great pleasure we share with you our Success in campaigning for banning a Sexist advertisement.  Last week, the advert below (of a local  stout beer) sparked a furor in Mozambique and managed to galvanize the women’s movement (across the spectrum), to rally together against it. They claimed successfully that this advert was insulting, discriminatory, sexist, and against women’s dignity. After a press conference, a campaign against the brewer (Cervejas de Mocambique) was launched. The brewer bowed to the pressure and decided to unconditionally withdraw the advertisement. Fórum Mulher (Women Forum) and the Mozambican Human Rights League led the protest.”

We know the fight does not end there. We have a long way to go because this is assuredly not the only advert that uses women’s body in a sexist way, nor is it the only form of violence against women. For more information on our campaign, please do not hesitate to contact us: forum@forumulher.org.mz. .
