Clean Water Is a Human Right for Women & Girls

water - (c) MADREThe world’s limited supply of drinkable water is unevenly distributed – nearly one in eight people don’t have access to safe water.  Unsafe drinking water is the number one source of disease worldwide, killing more children in poor communities every year than wars, malaria and HIV/AIDS combined.

This isn’t only a human tragedy, it’s also a women’s human rights issue. It’s women and girls who are overwhelmingly responsible for providing water to households and who must walk farther and work harder to haul water when it becomes scarce.

Water - (c) ZakherThanks to the generous support of MADRE members, we have been working to make access to clean water a reality.  MADRE is drilling wells, setting up high-capacity filters, distributing anti-contamination supplies, teaching women about sanitation and their right to clean water, and demanding that right in the international arena. With your help today, we’re determined to do more to save lives and defend women’s rights.

In Kenya, drought is hitting poorer communities the hardest, and many are in desperate need of food and water. Your support will help bring emergency food and water to families hit hardest by the drought.

In Haiti, women are taking a leadership role in helping control and treat cholera. Your support will help distribute hundreds of cholera prevention kits of salt, bleach, water jugs and soap. And we will be able to offer training to hundreds of other women in cholera prevention and treatment.

In Gaza, less than 10 percent of water is safe to drink. We will meet urgent needs and build long-term solutions to the crises women face by installing 25 filters that will provide safe water to 8,750 families.

In Nicaragua, climate change is producing more severe tropical storms and hurricanes, causing flooding that pollute the wells. We are providing water safety workshops for women and families, cleaning and repairing wells and latrines in three communities, and bringing clean water to 600 families.
