SIGNALS
Relationships that later on turn violent often start with passionate love
like many other relationships and slowly and gradually become violent. The
following checklist contains some signs that describe controlling behaviour and
may indicate violence. Do some of the following apply to you?
- You are constantly walking on eggshells not to upset
your partner. You feel that you have to obey your partner to keep him
calm.
- You feel you should stop (or you already have stopped)
seeing your friends and relatives, because your partner doesn't like them.
- You hesitate to state your own opinions when with your
partner.
- You feel nervous when your partner is around.
- Your partner accuses you of flirting with others or
being unfaithful. Jealousy can be directed towards pets or relatives.
- Your partner often questions your judgment and mental
health. If you have children, your parner may threat with child protection
services.
- Your relationship started passionately and your partner
fast became centre of your attention, hopes and dreams. You feel that you
are the only one who can help your partner with his problems.
- Your partner stops you from doing things you enjoy.
- Your partner openly criticizes and humiliates you in
front of other people.
- Your partner makes you feel stupid and worthless.
- Your partner has broken things or used physical
violence (shaken you or slapped you) or threatened with violence.
- You are more concerned about your partner's feelings
and wants than those of your own.
- Your are afraid to refuse having sex with your partner.
- Your partner has threatened to hurt or kill himself, if
you leave him.
- Your partner has threatened to kill you.
