TOOLKIT FOCUS ON LATIN AMERICA

Toolkit for Intersecting Violences

This Toolkit is a companion to the CAWN report Intersecting Violences (2010) by Patricia Muñoz Cabrera. The report provides a review of feminist theories and debates relating to violence and poverty as they affect women, with a focus on Latin America. In this Toolkit we provide some practical examples on how the intersectional analysis explored in the report is being put into practice on the ground. The section headings in the Toolkit relate to chapters in the report, and we have started each section by listing some key words to reflect the multiple identities and the intersection of different dimensions of discrimination that are addressed in the subsequent case studies.

There are a number of organisations that have an interesting and innovative approach to work on these issues in different countries in Latin America and we have selected a few to share their lessons more widely. We gathered the information for the case studies between December 2010 and February 2011: we contacted, sent them questionnaires, and subsequently interviewed some to find out more about their approach to work on violence. We have included a brief history of the organisations, as well as the information on their approaches to work on Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) that they provided.

We have listed links to websites and to some useful resources, tools and networks of organisations to help groups to strengthen their own approaches to work on violence and discrimination using an intersectional focus. These links are mainly in the organisations’ working languages, Spanish and Portuguese, but we have provided links to resources translated into English when available.
