February 25 2011 - FORWARD welcomes the publication of the UK Government’s Multi-Agency Practice Guidelines: Female Genital Mutilation – guidance which demonstrates the value of collaboration between government, statutory professionals and voluntary agencies in taking action to end FGM. FGM is illegal in the UK under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. The law demonstrates government commitment to address this problem, however without effective government led implementation and coordination of efforts to embed these guidelines, the 24,000 British girls under the age of 15 who remain at high risk of being forced to undergo the most severe form of FGM will not be safeguarded. FORWARD now calls on the government to address this policy gap.
