IWRAW AP - GLOBAL TO
LOCAL CEDAW REPORTING PROGRAM FOR NGO'S
Seeking NGO contacts for the 51st
CEDAW Session (Jan 2012) - Algeria, Brazil, Comoros, Grenada, Jordan, Norway,
Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe
Greetings from IWRAW Asia Pacific.
We are once again seeking suitable NGOs to participate in our “From Global to Local” programme, which aims to help women’s groups participate in the CEDAW reporting process. We are writing to ask your help in identifying NGOs from countries reporting at the 51st CEDAW Session which has been tentatively scheduled for January 2012.
· LIST OF COUNTRIES REPORTING AT THE 51st CEDAW
SESSION
The following
countries have been tentatively scheduled
to report at the 51st CEDAW session:-
Algeria, Brazil, Comoros, Grenada, Jordan, Norway, Republic of Congo,
Zimbabwe
We would very much appreciate your suggestions of any
women’s NGOs from these countries that you feel should be part of the programme
and the CEDAW reporting process.
We will contact the recommended NGOs to determine
whether they are interested in participating in our “From
Global to Local” programme and the CEDAW reporting process.
The programme:
(1) Helps women’s organisations understand the CEDAW
reporting process so they can prepare a shadow / alternative report that
touches on all of the articles of the CEDAW Convention and use the reporting
process to frame their advocacy efforts; and
(2) Facilitates the presence of NGO
representatives from reporting countries at the CEDAW
Sessions to monitor the review of their State parties and to interact with the
CEDAW Committee members in order to raise pertinent issues concerning women in
their country.
Please note that
only NGOs are eligible to participate in “From Global to
Local”. IWRAW Asia Pacific has taken the stand that persons that will be on the
government delegation to the CEDAW session, or have helped write the government
report to the CEDAW Committee should NOT be involved in writing the
shadow/alternative report, and are NOT eligible to attend the “From Global to
Local” training at the CEDAW Session.
We hope that you will be able to help us with this request.
Many thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

International
Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW Asia Pacific) is an
international organisation based in the South that plays a critical role in
filling the gap between the promise of women's human rights embodied in human
rights treaties, and their actual realisation at the national level. This
involves mobilising women's groups at all levels to draw accountability from
governments on the domestic application of human rights standards. This is done
primarily through the lens of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and other international human rights
treaties. Established in 1993, IWRAW Asia Pacific currently works throughout
South and Southeast Asia and over 100 countries globally. For further
information see our website, http://www.iwraw-ap.org.
