National Implementation Overview
National
Implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and the related resolution
(SCR 1820; SCR 1888; SCR 1889) is an important tool for furthering the women,
peace and security agenda. National Implementation is also a sub-theme of
General Women, Peace and Security, and part of PeaceWomen’s analytical
framework to classify women, peace and security resources. You can find further

Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) urges Member States to take action at the national level in key areas. Following up on the implementation of the resolution, in Presidential Statements S/PRST/2004/40 and S/PRST/2005/52, the Security Council called on Member States to continue to implement resolution 1325 (2000), including through the development of national action plans (NAPs) or other national level strategies. The creation of an action plan provides an opportunity to initiate strategic actions, identify priorities and resources, and determine responsibilities and timeframes at a national level.
Presently, 25 countries have approved national action plans and numerous others are currently in the drafting phase. The whole process of developing a plan is also one of awareness raising and capacity-building in order to overcome gaps and challenges to the full implementation of resolution 1325 (2000). It must be noted, however, that NAPs are not the only way to develop policy on women, peace and security. Some countries may choose to mainstream women, peace and security issues into other policy frameworks. Furthermore, developing policy is only the first step in implementation.
UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) urges Member States to take action at the national level in the following key areas:
Although, we have seen some developments in national implementation, it is important that more Member States take responsibility for the successful implementation of resolution 1325 (2000) and ensure that it is integrated into their national policies and training programmes.
To date, there are 24 countries which have adopted a National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 which include:
1. The Austrian National Action Plan on Implementing UNSCR 1325 was released on 8 August 2007.
2. The Belgian National Action Plan on the implementation of UNSCR 1325 was launched on 8 May 2009.
3. The Bosnian-Herzegovinian National Action Plan for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 was launched in July 2010.
4. The Canadian Action Plan for the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security was launched in October 2010.
5. The Chilian National Action Plan for the Implementation of the UNSCR 1325 was launched on 3 August 2009.
6. The Cote D'Ivoire National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 was launched in January 2007.
7. Denmark Action Plan for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 was adopted in June 2005, and revised in 2008.
8. The DRC National Action Plan for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 was launched in June 2010.

10. The Estonian Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 was released in November 2010.
11. Finland launched its National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 on 19 September 2008.
12. France National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 Women,Peace & Security was launched in November 2010.
13. The Icelandic government launched its National Plan of Action for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 on 8 March 2008.
14. The Liberia National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 was launched on 8 March 2009.
15. The Nepalese National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR was launched in October 2010.
16. The Norwegian Government Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR was released in March 2006.
17. The Philippine National Action Plan for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 & 1820 was launched in March 2010.
18. The Portuguese National Action Plan for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 was released in August 2009.
19. The Rwandan National Action Plan for the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 was launched in May 2010.
20. The Sierra Leone National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 was launched in March 2010.
21. The Spanish National Action Plan for the Implementation of the UNSCR 1325 was released in November 2007.
22. The Swedish National Action Plan to implement UNSCR 1325 was adopted in October 2006, and revised in 2009.
23. The Swiss National Action Plan for the implementation of UNSCR 1325 was launched in February 2007, and revised in October 2010.
24. The Uganda Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 & 1820 and the Goma Declaration was released in December 2008.
