Publication: 11. Does the Situation of Minority
Women Require Particular Attention? Discrimination
against women remains a persistent and universal problem.
However, some women's problems are compounded by their uniquely
disadvantaged position in society as members of national, racial, ethnic, religious or
linguistic minorities that are targets of discrimination. Women and girls from
disadvantaged minority groups experience multiple and intersectional discrimination
based both on their minority status and their gender.......
Partial checklist proposed of issues to which particular attention should be
paid in
relation to minority women.
Examples from Extensive List: *Minority
women's access to specific social services, including education in
their own language and culturally sensitive health care, child care facilities,
etc. *The
situation of minority women vis-a-vis matromonial property rights and the tenure
of the land and property in general.
*Minority
women's equal access to humanitarian aid in conflicts or natural disasters.
*Particular discrimination against women on the basis of work of descent
(caste) and gender, for example women being forced to do particular tasks such
as manual scavenging or forced into prostitution.
*Supporting dialogue with women belonging to minorities especially in conflict
situations (with particular reference to Security Council Resolution
1325)......
